One of the two men who was previously arrested in November on drug and weapon charges during the search for a missing Mundelein man has been taken into custody again on new charges as the “homicide investigation” remains ongoing.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced on November 12 that they were searching for Ruslan Furman, 51, who was last known to reside in the 26500 block of North Route 60-83 in unincorporated Mundelein.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said at the time that Furman had not been seen in over a week from November 12, meaning he went missing prior to November 5.
Detectives said they believed there was foul play linked to his disappearance.
Covelli said Furman was missing under “concerning circumstances” but has declined to elaborate further.
A search warrant was obtained on November 11 for crime-related evidence at Furman’s residence in the 26500 block of North Route 83 in unincorporated Mundelein.
A heavy police presence consisting of police canines, detectives and SWAT team members was seen in the area that afternoon as the warrant was carried out.
Investigators and the SWAT team also appeared to carry out a second search warrant at a nearby home in the 26600 block of North Kenwood Court.
Investigators arrested Dmitry Bogatiryov, 52, of Mundelein, and Damen Voranoff, 56, of Mundelein.
Covelli said the two men were found in possession of firearms and a large amount of cannabis inside their residence during a search warrant in connection with the missing person investigation.
Bogatiryov was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm without a FOID, manufacturing or delivery of 2,000-5,000 grams of cannabis and possession of cannabis over 5,000 grams.
Voranoff was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm without a FOID, manufacturing or delivery of 500-2,000 grams of cannabis and possession of cannabis between 2,000-5,000 grams.
Public records link Bogatiryov to the home on Route 83 and Voranoff to the home on Kenwood Court.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Theis said Voranoff was found with 14 guns and over 1,000 grams of cannabis, consisting of flower and THC cartridge pods.
Voranoff does not have a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card or concealed carry license. He does not have an extensive criminal history, Theis said, adding that he was on pre-trial release for a misdemeanor child endangerment case.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Dino Katris said Bogatiryov was found with four guns, 1,437 grams of flower cannabis, 1,227 grams of cannabis oil and 75 grams of cannabis wax.
Bogatiryov also does not have a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card.
The charges against both of the men are non-detainable. Bogatiryov was released on pre-trial release conditions but Voranoff was ordered held in the Lake County Jail following a hearing to revoke his pre-trial release in his prior case for committing the new offense.
Bogatiryov was recently arrested again on March 26 by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and charged with possession of cannabis between 2,000 and 5,000 grams, a Class 2 felony, and illegal possession of ammunition, a Class A misdemeanor.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Sue Price Cohen said Bogatiryov has failed to provide an updated address to pre-trial services monitoring after his initial release and then committed a new offense in violation of his pre-trial release conditions.
Detectives were involved in an “ongoing investigation into a missing person homicide case” when they obtained another search warrant for Bogatiryov’s Mundelein residence, Price Cohen said.
The warrant was conducted on March 26 and a SWAT team surrounded the residence and made announcements for those inside to come out, Price Cohen said.
Detectives noticed Bogatiryov had obvious signs of intoxication from alcohol, a violation of his pre-trial release.
Price Cohen said detectives found a black bag containing a large white plastic bag in plain view.
A large amount of cannabis product was inside the bag, which weighed nearly five pounds.
Three rounds of ammunition were in a bedroom, Price Cohen said, adding that was also a violation of his pre-trial release in addition to it being a misdemeanor offense since he does not have a FOID card.
“He has proven very clearly to the court that he is not going to comply and has not complied with the rules that the court has set,” Price Cohen said.
Price Cohen said it was ironic that Bogatiryov violated his pre-trial release and committed new criminal offenses despite knowing he is the subject of an ongoing investigation.
Prosecutors filed a petition to revoke his pre-trial release after the arrest and Lake County Judge Ari Fisz granted the request.
Bogatiryov is scheduled to appear in court again on April 22 for a preliminary hearing and Damen is scheduled to appear in court again on April 16 for a case management conference. Both men remain held in the Lake County Jail.
Furman was last seen near his home and was last seen wearing blue jeans and a t-shirt.
He is 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.
Prosecutors have repeatedly mentioned in court that the case was possibly a homicide.
Covelli told Lake and McHenry County Scanner in an update in December that the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division was continuing to actively investigate the disappearance.
Numerous pieces of evidence collected pursuant to search warrants were sent to the crime lab for forensic analysis, Covelli said. “Our belief that foul play is a factor remains consistent at this point,” he added.
Members of the sheriff’s office, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the fire department searched Diamond Lake in November for any evidence of his disappearance in the lake.
Canine units were also searching by land around Diamond Lake. Furman remains missing despite the searches, Covelli said.
