A teenage boy was transported to the hospital after he said he fell asleep while driving, causing a crash that caused his car to roll over and become heavily damaged near Barrington, the sheriff said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Wauconda Fire District responded around 6:35 p.m. Wednesday to the 24500 block of North Kelsey Road in unincorporated Barrington for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

A 911 caller reported a vehicle rolled over in the ditch on Kelsey Road between Fenview Drive and Fieldstone Court.

Fire crews arrived and found the driver had self-extricated from the car and was lying down on the ground. The car was heavily damaged.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Chief Christopher Covelli said deputies arrived and confirmed it was a single-vehicle crash.

A 2020 Jeep Gladiator sustained significant damage on the side of the road.

The driver, a 17-year-old from Barrington, was traveling westbound on Kelsey Road in the area, Covelli said.

The driver told deputies he fell asleep and drove off the roadway into a culvert.

The Jeep went airborne and rolled over before coming to rest in the tree line, Covelli said.

Covelli said it was fortunate that there were no other occupants in the car and no other vehicles involved.

The driver was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington with non-life-threatening injuries.

Fire crews reported that ground wires for communication lines were torn out of the ground during the crash.

Deputies did not issue any citations to the driver. A tow truck responded and towed the vehicle.
