A suspect was taken into custody after a report of a residential burglary in progress in Highland Park that prompted police activity and a school lockdown Thursday afternoon.
The Highland Park Police Department responded around 12:07 p.m. Thursday to the area of Michigan Avenue and Green Bay Road.
City officials said a 911 call was received reporting a residential burglary in progress.
The 911 caller did not interact with the suspect but saw them and was able to provide a description.
No weapons were reported and police officers began searching the area, city officials said.
The Highwood, Lake Forest and Northbrook police departments responded to assist in the investigation.
They were able to locate the suspect and take them into custody. No charges have been announced yet.
Township High School District 113 placed Highland Park High School in secure mode due to the police activity “out of an abundance of caution.”
“The City appreciates the partnership of Highwood, Lake Forest, and Northbrook police in responding to this call and assisting with the investigation,” the city said.
City officials say residential burglaries can occur at any time of day.
The police department urges residents to call 911 to report suspicious behavior to the police.
The city releases tips for proactive measures to deter criminals from residential and vehicle thefts and burglaries.
Those include securing keys and keeping valuables out of sight, always removing keys and key fobs from cars, whether parking at home, in the community or stopping for gas.
People should also lock all doors, including car doors, even if their car is parked in the garage.
“Be sure to lock the door from your home to your garage. Leave your outside lights on overnight, especially if parking your vehicle outside. Report any suspicious activity immediately to the police,” the city said.
Suspicious activity or behavior may include vehicles driving slowly and aimlessly, especially at night with lights off, and people loitering around parked cars and peering into windows.
The residential burglary follows another attempted residential burglary that was reported to the Highland Park Police Department around on March 26 in the 2800 block of Lexington Lane East.
A police report said suspects made entry into the garage of a home and burglarized a vehicle around 5:25 a.m. that day. They also entered an unlocked car in the driveway and items were stolen.
