Police said in an update that a 35-year-old man who was found fatally shot in a park in Spring Grove — discovered by a woman walking her dog — was an “isolated incident” with no threat to the community.

The Spring Grove Fire Protection District and Spring Grove Police Department responded around 1 p.m. Monday to Springdale Trail Park in the 2100 block of Bonner Lane for a report of a person down.

A 911 caller reported she was walking her dog and found a male who was down on the ground along a trail, according to emergency radio traffic.

Police officers arrived and found an injured subject who was unresponsive with a gunshot wound, according to Spring Grove Chief of Police Michael Niedzwiecki.

McHenry County Coroner Dr. Michael Rein identified the subject on Friday as Kyriakos Iatropoulos, 35, of Spring Grove.

Iatropoulos was suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, Rein said.

Iatropoulos was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Niedzwiecki said there are no indications that the incident involved a threat to the public and no suspects are being sought.

“Preliminary findings suggest this was an isolated incident involving circumstances specific to the individual,” Niedzwiecki said.

“The department understands that incidents of this nature are concerning to the community. We want to reassure residents that there is no ongoing danger and no evidence of a random or targeted act affecting the public,” the police chief added.

The Spring Grove Police Department requested the McHenry County Coroner’s Office to respond.

Rein said his office responded and took possession of Iatropoulos for an autopsy, which was performed on Tuesday. Toxicology results are pending.

No cause or manner of death has been released by the coroner’s office as of Friday.

Niedzwiecki said information was not released to the public after the incident in order to allow for family notification and to respect the privacy of those affected during the “difficult time, as well as to ensure investigators could properly assess the circumstances.”

Rein said his office is continuing to work collaboratively on the investigation with the Spring Grove Fire Protection District and Spring Grove Police Department.
