Police took a suspect into custody and the FBI was called after he committed a bank robbery in Highland Park where he stole cash before fleeing on foot, officials said.

The Highland Park Police Department responded around 3:04 p.m. on April 14 to the Chase Bank, 255 Skokie Valley Road in Highland Park, for a call reporting a bank robbery that had just occurred.

Officers learned a white male had passed a note to a bank teller demanding cash, according to city officials.

The teller complied and provided cash from the drawer.

The suspect placed the cash into a backpack and fled the scene on foot.

City officials said the teller called the police and provided a description after the suspect fled.

Highland Park police officers arrived quickly, established a perimeter and began searching for the suspect.

A subject matching the provided description was located by police walking on foot at the Shell gas station, 10 Skokie Valley Road.

The subject admitted to passing the note at Chase Bank and said that the note was in his backpack.

Officers searched the backpack and found proceeds stolen from Chase Bank, city officials said.

The suspect was taken into custody by police around 3:21 p.m. The Chase Bank teller positively identified the individual as the suspect who passed the note during the robbery.

Police collected physical evidence from the bank and the subject was transferred into the custody of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The investigation determined that the subject acted alone and had no connection to Highland Park.

“This successful resolution was made possible by the calm handling of the situation, quick reporting of the crime and the outstanding investigation by Highland Park police officers. The City also appreciates the partnership and support of neighboring law enforcement agencies and the FBI,” the city said in the statement.
