A dozen fire departments responded to a fire that left a home in unincorporated Antioch with significant damage Saturday afternoon.
The Antioch Fire Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 2:40 p.m. Saturday to the 41200 block of North Lincoln Avenue in unincorporated Antioch for a report of a structure fire.
Firefighters arrived and found smoke coming from the roof of the single-story home, Antioch Deputy Fire Chief Jim Cook said.
Crews pulled hose lines and began attacking the fire.
The area does not have fire hydrants, so firefighters began establishing water tender operations.
“All of our tankers were here, so we didn’t have any water supply problems. Hose lines were deployed quickly, and the house was easy to get into,” Cook said.
Crews found the fire in the attic space of the home.
Firefighters pulled parts of the ceiling to expose the fire and extinguish it.
“The crews were working very hard, pulling ceilings and trying to get to the seat of the fire, being that it was in the attic,” Cook said.
About 30 minutes after firefighters first arrived, a box alarm was requested through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, which brought in resources and additional manpower from fire departments in Lake and Kenosha counties.
Emergency vehicles were lined up along North Lincoln Avenue.
Firefighters eventually brought the fire under control.
About 9,000 gallons of water were dumped from three water tenders during the fire operation, Cook said.
Field employees with ComEd and Nicor Gas responded to the scene to shut off power and gas to the house.
It’s unclear how many residents were inside the house at the time of the fire, but it appears there was only one resident with his dog.
No one was injured, Cook said.
Crews remained on scene to conduct overhaul operations and fire investigators from nearby fire departments assisted with determining how the fire started.
The fire left the house with significant damage, and it is deemed uninhabitable.
Fire personnel from Newport Township, Bristol, Lake Villa, Fox Lake, Salem Lakes, Greater Round Lake, Grayslake, Wauconda, Zion, Winthrop Harbor, Beach Park and Spring Grove assisted at the scene.
The fire remains under investigation, and a damage estimate was not immediately available.
