A teenage female was transported to the hospital after being injured when multiple gunmen fired approximately 60 shots toward a car she was sitting in outside a hotel in North Chicago.

The North Chicago Police Department responded around 12:14 a.m. Sunday to the Red Carpet Inn North Chicago, 3207 Buckley Road in North Chicago, for a report of shots fired.

North Chicago Assistant Police Chief Gary Lunn said 911 callers reported hearing gunshots.

Officers arrived and determined that a large gathering of younger people had been occurring inside one of the hotel rooms.

Lunn said officers located an 18-year-old woman who sustained an injury to her face.

The North Chicago Fire Department was also dispatched to the scene.

She was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment and was stable at the hospital.

It was later determined that the woman had been in a vehicle that had been shot at, Lunn said.

The woman was injured by glass or shrapnel caused by a bullet striking near where she had been sitting.

Lunn said investigators learned several suspects armed with guns had been shooting towards the vehicle that the victim was sitting in.

Approximately 60 shell casings were recovered. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.

Lunn said it is clear whether the female victim had been inside the hotel room where the party was occurring prior to the shooting.

Officers from surrounding law enforcement agencies assisted at the scene and the evidence division of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force was requested to respond.

Lunn said the shooting was believed to be targeted but the investigation remains ongoing.
