The quick actions of an off-duty Kenosha sheriff deputy helped limit damages from an overnight fire in Wadsworth early Saturday, officials said.
Chief Christopher Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said the unidentified off-duty deputy from Kenosha County called 9-1-1 at about 1:40 a.m. to alert authorities that a fire had started in the 39000 block of Mauser Drive in Wadsworth.
Because of the quick thinking of the sheriff’s deputy and because Lake County deputies were able to get to the scene quickly, Covelli said no one was injured in the blaze.
“Our sheriff’s deputies were able to wake the home’s occupants and get them out of the house before the fire could spread to the home,” Covelli said.
Newport Township Fire Protection District Fire Chief Mark Kirschhoffer said the fire district was called to the single-family home in the 39000 block of Mauser Drive at about 1:40 a.m. Saturday for a fire burning in a wood pile near the garage and several automobiles.
The fire resulted in 3 cars suffering from moderate to heavy damage, Kirschhoffer said.
The home received siding damage, Kirschhoffer said, which was quickly extinguished.
No injuries were reported from either home occupants or emergency personnel, Kirschhoffer said.
All occupants of the home are back in safely, he said.
Kirschoffer said the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
