A man was charged with DUI after he crashed his Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Route 45 in Lindenhurst while allegedly drunk and then became confrontational with bystanders who tried to help him.
The Lindenhurst Police Department declined to release information on the incident when reached by Lake and McHenry County Scanner, which then had to obtain the police and arrest reports through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.
Gregory Yonan, 60, of Libertyville, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, a Class A misdemeanor, and cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, a petty offense.
The Lindenhurst Police Department and Lake Villa Fire Protection District responded around 6:05 p.m. on April 26 to Route 45 and Country Place in Lindenhurst for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Police officers and firefighter/medics arrived to find a crash involving a 2015 Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and the motorcycle was laid down with heavy damage to its right side.
The motorcyclist, identified as Yonan, was allegedly confrontational with witnesses at the scene who were trying to help him after the crash, the police report said.
Firefighter/medics evaluated Yonan, who was bleeding from a gouge on his head.
The man refused to be transported to the hospital and refused further evaluation by the medics, the report said.
“It appeared Gregory urinated on his pants and they were wet on the front and back,” the report said.
Officers allegedly smelled alcohol from Yonan’s breath as they were speaking with him.
When asked if he had any drinks, Yonan “stated that he had a drink or so, but he was not drunk,” the report said.
Yonan agreed to perform standardized field sobriety tests, where he allegedly showed signs of impairment on the horizontal gaze nystagmus and walk and turn tests.
Yonan refused to perform a one-leg stand and a preliminary breath test, the report said.
Officers continued to smell a strong odor of alcohol from Yonan during the tests and subsequently arrested him for DUI.
A tow truck from A-Tire County Service in Round Lake responded to remove Yonan’s Harley-Davidson.
A portion of Route 45 was temporarily shut down while police officers and firefighters were tending to the scene. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded and assisted with traffic control.
Yonan was transported to the Lindenhurst Police Department, where he refused to take a breathalyzer test.
Officers continued to smell alcohol from Yonan while at the police station, the report said.
At around 7:10 p.m., the Lake Villa Fire Protection District responded to the police station to evaluate Yonan again because his head was still bleeding, but he refused to go to the hospital.
Yonan also allegedly had a jar of suspected marijuana in the pocket of his jacket, which was confiscated for destruction.
Yonan was issued a mandatory court appearance and was released from custody.
Yonan is scheduled to appear at the Lake County Courthouse on May 21 for an arraignment.
