A 16-year-old boy was saved in part by an off-duty paramedic who performed CPR and applied an AED after the boy collapsed and stopped breathing on the track at Huntley High School Monday evening.
The Huntley Fire Protection District responded around 7:20 p.m. Monday to Huntley High School, 13719 Harmony Road in Huntley, for a person not breathing call.
Huntley Fire Chief Dan Wagner said it was reported that a subject was in cardiac arrest — not conscious and not breathing.
Huntley Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Michael Pierce said a 911 caller reported that CPR was in progress and an AED was on scene.
911 dispatchers advised that a shock had been delivered by the AED to the victim and a pulse had been regained.
Paramedics arrived on the scene in five minutes and found a 16-year-old male patient, Pierce said.
He was lying at the end of the track being tended to by an off-duty paramedic and high school staff.
Pierce said the boy was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital for treatment. He was stable at the time of transport.
The incident occurred on the outside track of the school. It is unknown what event may have been occurring at the school at the time.
Wagner said his agency is following up on the initial reports that the off-duty paramedic performed CPR and used an AED prior to the fire department’s arrival.
“We are still attempting to confirm the identity of the off duty paramedic who assisted,” he said.
Huntley Community School District 158 did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Lake and McHenry County Scanner.
