A pig was found dead, two cats were rescued and a firefighter was hospitalized after a fire engulfed a house and left residents displaced in Antioch early Thursday morning.
The Antioch Fire Department responded around 4:35 a.m. Thursday to the 600 block of Summerlyn Drive in Antioch for a report of a structure fire.
A 911 caller reported the house was fully engulfed in flames.
Firefighters arrived and found heavy smoke and flames showing from a single-family, two-story residence.
The fire was coming from behind the attached garage of the home and was extending up to the roof.
Fire command requested a Working Still Alarm to bring in additional fire departments to the scene and to cover other calls for service in Antioch.
Utility companies were requested to shut off power to the home and secure the gas supply to the home.
Firefighters conducted a “transitional” fire attack where they began working to extinguish the fire from the outside before moving into the home to continue extinguishing the fire.
A master stream, a high-volume nozzle, was positioned from a ladder truck to extinguish remaining hot spots while crews conducted overhaul operations.
A pot-bellied pig was found dead and two cats were rescued by the fire department during the incident.
A firefighter suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to the hospital.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the box alarm level to bring fire investigators from throughout the county to the scene.
Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately three hours cleaning up and ensuring all hot spots were extinguished.
A damage estimate was not immediately available but the home was deemed uninhabitable.
Multiple crews with Romexterra Construction Fire & Water Restoration Services responded for damage restoration services.
Groot Waste Management also disposed of property that was damaged in the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Antioch Fire Department.
