A person was transported to the hospital after they became partially trapped inside a machine at a flower shop and nursery in Crystal Lake Friday afternoon, fire officials said.

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded around 12:50 p.m. Friday to Countryside Flower Shop, Nursery and Garden Center, 5301 East Terra Cotta Avenue in Crystal Lake, for a report of a traumatic injury.

Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department Deputy Chief Mark Menzel said a 911 caller reported that a victim had gotten caught in a rototiller.

An upgraded response for additional resources was dispatched due to the possible extrication needed.

A rototiller is a gas or electric machine that breaks up compacted soil with rotating blades to help compost or fertilize soil.

Firefighters arrived and found the victim had his clothing caught in the machine, Menzel said.

They removed the person from the machine and paramedics treated them for a lower extremity injury.

A medical helicopter was initially placed on standby but was ultimately canceled as it was not needed, Menzel said.

An ambulance transported the patient to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry for treatment.

Menzel said he did not know whether the victim was an employee of the business or not.

Further details regarding how the incident occurred were not released.
