A gunman was taken into custody after allegedly firing a gun inside a home in Lake in the Hills, prompting a standoff that resulted in numerous police agencies responding Saturday morning.

The Lake in the Hills Police Department responded just before 12:30 a.m. Saturday to the 0-100 block of Manchester Court for a domestic disturbance.

Lake in the Hills Police Department Communications Coordinator Blaine Krage said a 911 caller reported a domestic altercation where a weapon was discharged.

Officers arrived and met with a family member outside the house who reported that the subjects involved in the dispute were still inside arguing.

All family members, except for the offender, were quickly and safely escorted off the property, Krage said.

The offender, who initially refused to exit the house, had discharged a gun in the house during the domestic altercation, Krage said. The gun was not fired in the direction of anyone.

The Crystal Lake Police Department, Huntley Police Department, Algonquin Police Department and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene to assist.

A trained negotiator eventually convinced the offender to exit the residence and surrender.

The incident was resolved without injury to anyone involved, Krage said.

Nestor Ramirez Sr., 50, who lives in the home, was transported to the McHenry County Jail in Woodstock.

Ramirez was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, a Class 4 felony, and reckless conduct, a Class A misdemeanor.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Ramirez fired the gun in the basement in a reckless manner after having an argument with his wife, endangering the safety of three family members in the home.

Ramirez appeared for an Initial Appearance Court hearing on Saturday and was released by McHenry County Judge Joel Berg, who denied the state’s attorney’s office’s petition to detain.

Berg placed Ramirez on pre-trial supervision with a GPS monitor and ordered him to stay away from the home and surrender all firearms.

Ramirez is scheduled to appear in court again on June 3 for a status of preliminary hearing.
