Firefighters rescued a wheelchair-bound woman who was trapped inside a house that caught on fire and sustained extensive damage in Algonquin, fire officials said.

The Carpentersville Fire Department responded around 12:59 p.m. Thursday to the 1700 block of Cambria Lane in Algonquin for a report of a structure fire.

Fire crews arrived and reported finding heavy smoke showing from a home, according to fire department radio traffic.

Carpentersville Fire Chief William Anaszewicz said firefighters found fire in a large two-story, single-family residence and began working to extinguish it.

Fire department radio traffic reported that a wheelchair-bound person was still inside the home in the basement.

Anaszewicz said fire crews located the elderly woman and removed her from the building.

She was evaluated for injuries and signed a medical release at the scene, declining transport to the hospital.

There were two other occupants in the home and they were able to successfully evacuate before the fire department arrived.

The fire started on the exterior of the home and spread into the attic, Anaszewicz said.

Firefighters worked quickly to stop the fire from spreading and the blaze was declared under control at 1:25 p.m.

Anaszewicz said there was extensive damage to the exterior siding in the rear of the home.

The fire then extended into the attic and damaged the second-floor master bedroom.

Anaszewicz said there were three residents who were displaced along with two dogs.

The East Dundee Fire Protection District, West Dundee Fire Department, Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District, Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District, Hoffman Estates Fire Department, Hanover Township Emergency Services and Huntley Fire Protection District assisted during the incident.

Damage was estimated at $180,000 and the cause remains under investigation by the Carpentersville Fire Department.
