A driver suffered only minor injuries after they drove their SUV off Gilmer Road into a wooded area, requiring firefighters to remove parts of trees and the car’s doors to free them near Mundelein.
The Wauconda Fire District initially responded around 12 p.m. Thursday to the area of Route 12 and North Old McHenry Road in North Barrington for a report of a vehicle crash.
A family member of the driver involved called 911 to report the crash, as the driver was confused about where they were, Wauconda Battalion Fire Chief John Spratt said.
Crews checked the area but did not find any crash.
Minutes later, the driver called 911 and dispatchers were able to determine they were off of Gilmer Road north of Fremont Center Road in unincorporated Mundelein.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Wauconda Fire District, Countryside Fire Protection District and Mundelein Fire Department responded and found a GMC Yukon SUV off the roadway.
The GMC sustained heavy damage after crashing into trees.
The driver, who was the sole occupant of the GMC, was trapped, Spratt said.
Firefighters spent around 10 minutes removing brush, trees and two doors of the GMC to safely free the driver.
An ambulance transported them to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with minor injuries, Spratt said.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office was investigating the crash. It is unknown if any citations would be issued.
