A 4-year-old or 5-year-old child was injured and transported to the hospital after a car drove off Interstate 94 and crashed into a sound barrier wall, causing heavy damage near Gurnee.

The Illinois State Police, Gurnee Fire Department and Libertyville Fire Department responded around 4:45 p.m. Monday to Interstate 94 near Route 120 in Gurnee for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

A 911 caller reported a child was unconscious and bleeding from the nose.

Gurnee Fire Department Lt. Jeremy Hagstrom said crews arrived and found a single-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of Interstate 94, just north of Route 120, at the 11.75 milepost.

The car, a black sedan, sustained heavy damage and four people were in the vehicle at the time.

No extrication was needed as all occupants were out of the car.

The car appeared to be traveling westbound on Interstate 94 when it veered off to the right, through the grass embankment east of the shoulder and struck the sound barrier wall.

Hagstrom said it is unknown how the crash occurred. There were tire tracks on the roadway.

Paramedics evaluated two adults and two children, including a 4-year-old or 5-year-old girl and a 7-year-old girl.

Hagstrom said the younger child was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Catherine Gratz Griffin Lake Forest Hospital.

While the young girl was initially reported to be unconscious, it was determined that her injuries were not serious or life-threatening.

The other child, as well as the two adults, were uninjured and declined transport to the hospital.

The fire department briefly shut down the far right lane of the interstate but it was later reopened. A tow truck pulled the car from the embankment and towed it from the scene.

The Illinois State Police is investigating the cause and circumstances of the crash.
