Multiple water tenders were called and firefighters from four departments spent over an hour battling a stubborn waste fire near the Thunder Hawk Golf Club in Beach Park last Friday.
The Beach Park Fire Department and Lake County Forest Preserves Ranger Police responded around 4:20 p.m. Friday to the area of West 33rd Street and McAree Road in Beach Park for a report of smoke in the area.
Firefighters arrived and found a large yard waste fire that was unattended next to a maintenance facility for the ThunderHawk Golf Club in the 12000 block of West 33rd Street.
The ThunderHawk Golf Club is one of three public golf courses owned and managed by the Lake County Forest Preserves.
The fire was on property owned by the forest preserves and golf club, tax records show.
The area does not have fire hydrants, prompting three water tenders each from the Beach Park, Newport Township and Antioch fire departments to respond.
Two fire engines from the Beach Park and Zion fire departments also responded.
Crews spent over an hour battling the stubborn waste fire.
At least two hose lines and a water cannon mounted on the top of a fire engine, called a “deck gun,” were used to fight the blaze.
Staff from the golf club brought in heavy equipment, like a compact track loader, to help move debris and expose the fire.
Lake County sheriff’s deputies and forest preserve ranger police officers shut down West 33rd Street between McAree Road and Green Bay Road while firefighters worked the scene.
The fire was extinguished at around 5:40 p.m., and the roadway was reopened a short time later.
No injuries were reported, and no structures were involved.
