The coroner’s office has released the identity of a Woodstock man who died at the scene after he drove off the roadway and crashed into a utility pole in Wonder Lake.
The Wonder Lake Police Department and the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District responded around 2:20 p.m. on May 18 to the area of West Wonder Lake Road and Pebble Creek Court in Wonder Lake for a vehicle crash.
Wonder Lake Chief of Police Kyle Mandernack said responding personnel were informed that the driver of the vehicle may have experienced a medical emergency prior to the collision.
Officers arrived and made contact with the driver and passenger of the vehicle.
The adult male driver was found unconscious and not breathing.
The McHenry County Coroner’s Office told Lake and McHenry County Scanner on Thursday that he was identified as William Zurakov, 68, of Woodstock.
Members of the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District attempted lifesaving measures on Zurakov, Mandernack said.
Officers were later informed by medical personnel that Zurakov had been pronounced dead at the scene.
The passenger, who was a family member of the driver, told officers that Zurakov appeared to have experienced a medical emergency before becoming unresponsive, Mandernack said.
The vehicle then went off the roadway and struck a utility pole, causing moderate damage to the car.
The passenger was uninjured in the crash and both occupants were believed to be wearing their seatbelts, Mandernack said. The car’s airbags had deployed.
There were no indications that alcohol was a factor in the incident, Mandernack said.
The McHenry County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene and launched a death investigation.
The coroner’s office said Zurakov’s death was the result of congestive heart failure and not from injuries in the crash.
