A SWAT team was called and police rescued a woman who was spotted seeking help before she was dragged into a home by a wanted parolee in Waukegan Tuesday afternoon.

The Waukegan Police Department responded around 12 p.m. Tuesday to the 2200 block of Walnut Street in Waukegan for a call for service.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Craig Neal said a witness reported seeing a female outside asking for help.

A male suspect took her inside a residence and said that she was okay.

Officers responded and a witness provided more information regarding the incident, Neal said.

The witness said the female white subject was outside of the residence, sitting near the curb and appeared disoriented.

The female flagged down a car and said, “Help me, I need an ambulance.”

Neal said the male white suspect, later identified as Barry J. May, 40, of Waukegan, exited the residence and forcefully pulled the female inside.

The couple did not leave the residence prior to police arrival.

Officers learned May was on parole and had several Illinois and Wisconsin warrants for his arrest, Neal said.

The warrants were for burglary, aggravated fleeing to elude, larceny, retail theft, bail jumping, shoplifting, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and reckless endangerment.

Officers knocked at the front door of the residence and announced themselves but there was no answer from inside.

Police made several loudspeaker announcements for May and any occupants to exit the residence, Neal said.

There was still no response or compliance and the Lake County Sheriff’s Tactical Response Team, which is a joint SWAT team with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Waukegan Police Department, was requested to assist.

Officers formed an entry team and forced entry into the residence, Neal said. A drone was deployed inside the home to obtain a visual inside.

May surrendered to the police without further incident and was placed under arrest and transported to the Waukegan Police Department.

The female was located inside the residence and was cooperative but required medical attention, Neal said.

The Waukegan Fire Department transported her to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan for emergency treatment.

No charges have been announced yet. The case remains under investigation by the Waukegan Police Department.

May remains held in the Lake County Jail awaiting extradition to Wisconsin.
