One person was injured after falling asleep behind the wheel of an SUV, driving the vehicle off the roadway, and partially submerging in a retention pond near North Barrington.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Chief Christopher Covelli said sheriff’s deputies responded to Route 59 and Scott Road in North Barrington at 2:55 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a car that drove off the roadway and into a retention pond.
Emergency personnel who arrived on scene found a 2015 Lexus SUV approximately 50 feet off the roadway and partially submerged in the retention pond near Scott Road, Covelli said.
Firefighters were able to remove the 70-year-old driver from Lake Barrington from the vehicle.
The female driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle, Covelli said.
The driver told authorities that she fell asleep while driving, Covelli said, causing her vehicle to swerve into the oncoming lane of traffic before going off the roadway and into the retention pond.
The driver was evaluated and transported from the scene to an area hospital by the Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department.
Covelli said no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Route 59 was completely shut down south of Route 22 while the incident was cleared.
The incident remains under investigation, Covelli said.
