Members of the Grayslake Fire District are mourning today after a longtime fire district trustee and fire commissioner died Saturday, officials said.
A. Karen Wojciechowski, 75, of Grayslake, died at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville Saturday, Grayslake fire officials announced.
Wojciechowski devoted more than 30 years of service to the Grayslake Fire District, officials said.
She served 10 years as a trustee with the fire district and 20 years as a fire commissioner, her obituary reads.
The obit continued that her commitment to the fire district, its members, and the community was unwavering, and her presence made a lasting difference in the lives of so many.
“Karen was a true pioneer and an inspiration to everyone who knew her,” the obit read. “She broke barriers with grace, courage, and determination. She helped pave the way for other women to lead, serve, and follow in her footsteps.”
Wojciechowski served as the first woman President of the Exchange Club in Grayslake and as the first woman to serve on the Fire Commission in its 125-year history.
The obit continues that Wojciechowski will be remembered for the person she was at her core—kind, loyal, and endlessly caring.
“She never met a stranger; everyone she encountered was welcomed as a friend,” the obit continued. “Her warmth, compassion, and genuine concern for others were felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She made those around her feel seen, valued, and deeply loved.”
Karen is survived by her husband of 37 years, Alan; her children, Karen Andersen, Teri (Mark) Staggs, Julie Underwood, Greg Rybarczyk, Justin Wojciechowski, and Jeffery Wojciechowski; her beloved 11 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her siblings, Corky Bell, Bradley (Fe) Bell, and Joanne (Bud) Mittelmeyer.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Alicia Wojciechowski; and her grandson, Bryan Andersen.
“While her accomplishments were many, the greatest legacy she leaves behind is the love she gave as a wife, mother, and friend,” the obituary adds. “She will be remembered not only for all she achieved, but for the love, warmth, and strength she gave so generously to the people who meant the most to her.”
A visitation for Wojciechowski will be held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. today, Thursday, at Strang Funeral Chapel, 410 E. Belvidere Road.
A funeral service will be held at Strang on Friday at 11 a.m.
Interment will be held at Ascension Catholic Cemetery in Libertyville, IL.
