The driver of a truck that fled the scene of a property damage crash in Barrington — which also involved a police cruiser crash as the officer was responding to the scene — has been charged.
Perrish A. Wells, 42, of Country Club Hills, is charged with leaving the scene of a property damage accident, improper turn at an intersection, and improper lane usage for his role in the crash at Route 14 and Lake Cook Road in Barrington, Barrington Police Chief David Daigle said.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded at 8:55 a.m. on May 20 to assist the Barrington Police Department following a crash involving one of their squad cars.
An officer with the Barrington Police Department was operating an unmarked 2023 Dodge Charger.
The squad was traveling southeast on Route 14 just northwest of the Lake Cook Road intersection in the outside lane of traffic.
The police officer received an emergency call for service and activated the squad’s emergency lights, Covelli said.
Covelli said the officer began making a U-turn but struck a southeast 2012 Toyota Camry, driven by a 20-year-old Cary woman, who was traveling in the inside lane of traffic.
Nobody was injured in the crash, but the squad required a tow truck to be removed from the scene.
No citations were issued to either driver since no injuries were reported, Covelli said.
Daigle said the officer involved in the crash was responding to a truck that struck a building at Long & Company Jewelers, 105 East Main Street in Barrington.
The truck fled the scene after damaging the building.
Daigle said the building’s bricks and awning were damaged in the crash.
