A gas station canopy at a Marathon gas station in Cary collapsed early Saturday morning, the second canopy to collapse in months at the same location, fire officials said.
The Cary Fire Protection District and Cary Police Department responded just after 1 a.m. Saturday to the Marathon gas station, 8 East Main Street in Cary, for a report of a structural collapse.
Emergency crews arrived to find that the service station canopy had collapsed at the corner of Northwest Highway and 1st Street.
Vucha said the gas station employee had already shut down and secured the fuel pumps prior to the arrival of emergency crews.
No vehicles were reportedly beneath the canopy at the time of the collapse and no injuries were reported.
The Village of Cary Building Department was requested to the scene to evaluate the damaged structure, Vucha said.
“As no fire, fuel leak, or other hazards were identified, firefighters cleared the scene shortly after completing their assessment,” he said.
The Cary Fire Protection District said they do not have any information regarding how or why the structure collapsed.
The canopy was the second canopy to collapse at the gas station after the prior collapse on December 7.
Cary Village Administration Erik Morimoto said at the time that there were luckily no injuries associated with the collapse and the fuel dispensing system was shut off immediately.
The convenience store remained open for business while the repairs were being coordinated.
“It is our understanding that the canopy was initially damaged in the wind storm this past August,” Morimoto said in December.
The gas station canopy was seen leaning following the windstorm.
The owner’s structural engineer deemed the structure stable at that time but the Village of Cary Community Development Department proactively directed the owner to rope off the area, Morimoto said.
The owner was also directed to expand the safety perimeter around the affected canopy until a final repair or replacement was completed.
That perimeter was in place when it fell over in December. The first canopy that collapsed has since been removed from the property.
The Village of Cary did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the second collapse on Saturday.
