Police and DCFS are investigating after an 8-year-old boy was found unresponsive at a Crystal Lake home and rushed to the hospital where he died Saturday morning.
The Crystal Lake Police Department and Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded around 9:50 a.m. Saturday to the 500 block of McHenry Avenue in Crystal Lake for a report of an unconscious person.
Emergency crews responding to the scene were informed that the person was unconscious and also not breathing.
Paramedics rushed the patient, a child, to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital with extra personnel on board the ambulance for lifesaving efforts.
McHenry County Coroner Dr. Michael Rein said his office was notified by the hospital around 11 a.m. that the 8-year-old boy had been pronounced dead.
An autopsy was performed on Tuesday at the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
Rein said the cause and manner of death remain under investigation, with toxicology testing now pending.
The coroner’s office said there were no findings during the autopsy so the cause of death has not been determined. The boy’s identity has not been released.
The McHenry County Coroner’s Office said they are working collaboratively with the Crystal Lake Police Department and Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital in the investigation.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) confirmed they were also involved in the case.
“DCFS is actively investigating this case and working with local law enforcement. It is the Department’s policy not to comment on active investigations,” a spokesperson for DCFS said Thursday.
The Crystal Lake Police Department did not respond to a request for comment as of Thursday morning.
