Three people, including two children, were transported to the hospital after they were injured in a head-on crash on Route 173 near Antioch caused by a driver who fell asleep.
The Antioch Fire Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 10 a.m. Sunday to the area of Route 173 and West Parkview Drive in unincorporated Antioch for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Antioch Fire Department Battalion Chief Tim Taylor said fire crews arrived and found a collision involving two vehicles.
The cars, an SUV and a crossover, had collided head-on and sustained moderate damage.
Paramedics evaluated five patients at the scene and three ambulances were requested, Taylor said.
Three of them, including two juvenile teenagers and an adult, were transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Two others declined transport to the hospital, Taylor said.
The crash occurred in a high-speed curve on Route 173 and the roadway was shut down in both directions for precautionary measures.
Taylor said the westbound lane was reopened but the eastbound lane remained closed until the tow trucks removed the two cars.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Chief Christopher Covelli said the at-fault driver reported they had fallen asleep, which caused them to drive into the oncoming lane.
Deputies did not observe any signs of impairment and the driver was cited for improper lane usage, Covelli said.
