A woman was seriously injured and two others were also hospitalized after an ice cream truck and an SUV crashed into each other, causing the ice cream truck to roll over near McHenry.
The McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 2:11 p.m. Friday to the intersection of Miller Road and Spring Grove Road in unincorporated McHenry for a report of a vehicle crash with entrapment.
Fire crews arrived and found heavy damage with two vehicles involved, according to McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief David Harwood.
Harwood said the crash involved an ice cream truck and a passenger car.
Both vehicles came to rest off the roadway and the ice cream truck rolled over onto its side.
Harwood said the ice cream truck was operated by an adult male driver with no passengers.
The other vehicle, a dark-colored SUV, was occupied by an adult female driver and an adult male passenger.
Three ambulances responded to the scene. A medical helicopter was initially placed on standby but canceled.
All three occupants were out of the vehicles when the fire department arrived despite the initial report of entrapment, Harwood said.
Paramedics transported the three occupants to the hospital.
Harwood said the driver of the SUV suffered serious injuries and the others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The intersection, which features a two-way stop, was shut down for approximately 30 minutes.
Tow trucks were called to the scene to remove both vehicles following the T-bone collision.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
