An intoxicated driver was left seriously injured and had to be extricated from his car and flown to the hospital after he rolled it over near McHenry, authorities said.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 2 a.m. on June 5 to the area of Route 31 and Johnsburg Road in unincorporated McHenry for a report of a crash with entrapment.
McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Katie Wendt said Thursday that deputies arrived and located the crash north of the intersection on Route 31 near Beck Road.
A 2021 Toyota Camry was found rolled over on its roof in a farm field northeast of the intersection.
Fire crews reported the vehicle was 30 yards off the roadway.
The vehicle was occupied by a 23-year-old Wonder Lake man, Wendt said. No other occupants were reported to be inside.
Firefighters worked for approximately 10 minutes to free the man, who was trapped inside the wreckage.
Wendt said the man suffered suspected serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital.
The ambulance crew met a LifeNet medical helicopter at its base at the hospital and transferred the victim to the helicopter.
The helicopter flew the man to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, which is a Level 1 trauma center.
Wendt said the driver was under the influence of alcohol. His vehicle was also uninsured.
The man was issued four citations for driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or more, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and improper lane usage.
