A wanted suspect was left seriously injured and most lanes on I-94 near Wadsworth remain shut down after he fled from the U.S. Marshals, rolled his car over, stabbed himself and was hit by a semi-truck while fleeing on foot.
The Newport Fire Protection District, Gurnee Fire Department and Illinois State Police responded around 12:15 p.m. Friday to the area of Interstate 94 near mile marker 2 in Wadsworth for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
Newport Fire Protection District Lt. Keenan Stone said fire crews arrived and found a pedestrian who had been struck by a semi-truck.
The U.S. Marshals Service had tried to take the adult male into custody a short time earlier at the Love’s Travel Stop at Frontage Road and Russell Road.
The suspect fled in a car but eventually crashed on eastbound Interstate 94 between the Frontage Road and Route 173.
The car rolled over into the ditch and the man reportedly exited the car and fled on foot from officers, Stone said.
A semi-tractor-trailer truck traveling on eastbound Interstate 94 in the area struck the suspect approximately 100 yards north of where the original crash occurred.
Stone said the suspect also suffered a self-inflicted stab wound, which was believed to be intentional, at some point during the ordeal.
Paramedics transported the seriously injured man to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
The man, who was approximately in his 40s, was conscious and breathing at the scene, Stone said. The crash involving the semi-truck occurred in the far right outside lane.
The Illinois State Police and Illinois Tollway Maintenance shut down the three right lanes on eastbound Interstate 94.
An active investigation is underway and the lanes remained closed as of 3:30 p.m. Friday.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office was called to assist the U.S. Marshals Service after the crash occurred.
The Illinois State Police told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the investigation is in its infancy and there was no further information available.
