An alleged intoxicated Antioch man was arrested after authorities say he crashed into a police car as an officer was out of the car on a traffic stop on Route 12 in Lake Zurich.
The Lake Zurich Police Department conducted a traffic stop around 9:15 p.m. Friday in the area of Route 12 near Cuba Road in Lake Zurich.
The police officer conducted the traffic stop in the right lane, according to Lake Zurich Deputy Police Chief Colin Gaffney.
The squad was partially in the right lane and the vehicle that was pulled over by the officer had parked fully on the right shoulder.
Gaffney said the officer was out of the car speaking with the driver of the stopped vehicle.
A 2022 Kia, which was traveling southbound, failed to yield to the squad car, which had its emergency lights activated.
The Kia struck the side of the squad car. No injuries were reported, Gaffney said.
The driver of the Kia was identified as Robert Kruck, 74, of Antioch, and was arrested.
Kruck was determined to be under the influence of drugs, Gaffney said.
He was charged with driving under the influence, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
The crash was the second occurrence of a Lake Zurich police car being struck by an impaired driver while on a traffic stop in the past six months.
“The Lake Zurich Police Department reminds the public of the requirements of the Move Over Law, otherwise known as ‘Scott’s Law,'” Gaffney said.
“When approaching an emergency vehicle with emergency lights activated, drivers are required to slow down and move over,” he added.
Kruck was released from custody after being processed at the Lake Zurich Police Department and given a future court hearing.
