Two juveniles were taken into custody after police responding to a shooting found a home that had been shot up by nearly a dozen rounds in Highwood Monday evening.
The Highwood Police Department responded around 9:30 p.m. Monday to the 300 block of Grove Avenue in Highwood for a report of shots fired.
Highwood Police Chief Dave Wentz said the neighbors called 911 to report the incident and officers arrived but found no one shot.
The front of a house had been struck by approximately 11 rounds, Wentz said. No one was believed to be inside at the time.
Two juveniles were taken into custody in connection with the shooting. They were located in the vicinity of the scene.
A large police response was sent, along with a canine unit, and officers recovered one gun, Wentz said.
The gun did not match the rounds fired in the shooting and officers continued search efforts for it.
The City of Highwood said in a statement that a police presence would be seen in the area of Highwood Avenue and Grove Avenue as police conducted searches late Monday evening.
The weapon involved remains missing despite the extensive search, Wentz said Tuesday. It was likely ditched by one of the offenders and could be in some bushes.
Anyone who may come across the gun is asked to immediately call 911.
Wentz said the motive for the shooting remains under investigation but it is not believed to be random.
Charges are pending against the suspects involved, the police chief added.
The Lake Forest Police Department, Highland Park Police Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
