The Mariano’s grocery store in Gurnee will be permanently closed next month after 12 years in business, with the company saying it is trying to ensure the “long-term health” of its business.
Amanda Puck, the Vice President of Communication and Brand Development for Roundy’s and Mariano’s Divisions, told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the company would close the Mariano’s, 6655 Grand Avenue in Gurnee.
Roundy’s and Mariano’s are subsidiaries of The Kroger Company.
The Gurnee store will close on July 17, Puck said, adding that it was “unfortunate” and a “difficult decision.
She said every impacted employee will have the opportunity to transfer to a new location.
“This closure is part of a larger company-wide decision to run more efficiently and ensure the long-term health of our business,” Puck said.
The Gurnee Mariano’s opened in July 2014 and was a part of nearly a dozen Dominick’s locations purchased by Roundy’s in December 2013.
The location added almost 500 jobs to the Gurnee area when it opened.
It was announced in July 2024 that almost all Mariano’s grocery stores in Lake and McHenry counties were expected to be sold as part of the then-pending merger between Kroger and Albertsons, which was later blocked by regulators.
Kroger later announced in June 2025 that it was closing three Mariano’s locations in the Chicagoland area.
Mariano’s stores at 450 West Half Day Road in Buffalo Grove, 2323 Capital Drive in Glenview and 144 South Gary Avenue in Bloomingdale were shut down in August 2025.
The Mariano’s in Buffalo Grove opened in 2014 in the building where Dominick’s had previously been before it was shuttered.
Kroger said in its first-quarter disclosure last year that the store closures were expected to provide a “modest financial benefit.”
“Kroger is committed to reinvesting these savings back into the customer experience, and as a result, this will not impact full-year guidance,” the company said in the disclosure.
Kroger operates more than 2,700 grocery stores in the United States. It is the largest supermarket operator in the United States based on revenue.
