A woman was left in critical condition after she lost control of a mini dirt bike and crashed the vehicle in a neighborhood in Johnsburg Thursday evening, fire officials said.
The McHenry Township Fire Protection District and Johnsburg Police Department responded around 7:28 p.m. Thursday to the area of Prairie Trail and North Riverside Drive in Johnsburg for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
A 911 caller reported that a female was involved in a dirt bike crash where she wiped out.
The caller reported the woman was initially unconscious but had regained consciousness and was suffering a head injury.
Fire crews arrived and confirmed a single-vehicle crash with the victim down on the ground.
McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Chris Kozel said an adult female was riding a miniature dirt bike in a residential neighborhood.
It appeared that the driver lost control and crashed on an asphalt-paved street.
No other vehicles appeared to be involved in the incident, Kozel said.
A medical helicopter was initially placed on standby and then requested to respond due to the “mechanism of injury” and lack of protective clothing and gear, Kozel said.
An ambulance transported the woman to the helipad at Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry to meet the LifeNet helicopter at their base.
The victim was transferred to the flight crew and flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, which is a Level 1 trauma center.
The woman was in critical but stable condition during transport, Kozel said.
