Officials announced on Sunday that a police officer with the Mundelein Police Department died in a “sudden and tragic” manner while off duty.
Mundelein Village Administrator Eric Guenther said a member of the Mundelein Police Department “passed away suddenly and tragically while off duty.”
The department will comment on the circumstances surrounding “this unfortunate situation” when appropriate, Guenther said Sunday in a statement.
“Right now, our focus is on supporting the family of this individual and respecting the family’s privacy while they grieve the loss of their loved one,” he added.
Mundelein Deputy Police Chief Thomas Poyner said Sunday afternoon that the police department will not be releasing a statement on the matter yet.
The Vernon Hills Police Department said in a now-deleted social media post that their “thoughts and prayers are with our partners at the Mundelein Police Department during this difficult time.”
“We stand beside you and offer our heartfelt support to your officers, staff, families, and the entire community,” the department said.
The circumstances surrounding the officer’s death have not been made public.
The Vernon Hills Police Department said that they would “hold off on details for now” when asked for further details regarding what happened.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office said it was not aware of a recent death involving a police officer in the county.
