A former Hawthorn Woods man is facing charges for allegedly voting multiple times in Illinois and Michigan following a Lake County investigation, prosecutors said.
Brian J. Barrick, 45, of Coloma, Michigan, was charged with one count of voting more than once, a Class 3 felony.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office said the charges were a result of an investigation initiated by the Lake County Clerk’s Office.
The clerk’s office began the investigation after it received notice of possible “voting irregularities” from the Illinois State Board of Elections.
Prosecutors said the clerk’s office’s investigation showed that Barrick cast two in-person votes in the general election.
The first was in Michigan on November 2, 2024, and the second was in Lake County on November 5, 2024, prosecutors said.
Records show Barrick owned a home in Hawthorn Woods at the time of the alleged offense. He sold the home in August 2025.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the felony charge against Barrick following a review of the case.
An arrest warrant was issued for Barrick in mid-April after a judge found probable cause in the case.
The warrant said Barrick voted once on November 2, 2024, in Michigan and then knowingly entered a voting machine in Lake County and cast a ballot in an election where the ballot listed any of the same candidates listed on the ballot he previously used for voting.
Barrick surrendered on the warrant last month to the Lake County Jail and appeared for a First Appearance Court hearing.
He was released on Level 1 pre-trial services monitoring and is scheduled to appear in court again on July 10 for a status of preliminary hearing.
