A medical helicopter airlifted a seriously injured child and eight other people were transported to hospitals after four cars crashed on Green Bay Road in Waukegan Monday afternoon.
The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 4:15 p.m. Monday to Green Bay Road near 8th Street in Waukegan, which is about a quarter-mile south of Belvidere Road, for multiple vehicles that crashed.

“Upon arrival, crews found a multi-vehicle accident that involved 4 vehicles and stretched over 2 blocks,” Waukegan Battalion Fire Chief of Administration Todd Zupec said.
The vehicles involved were a tan Chrysler Town & Country minivan, white Jeep Cherokee SUV, red Chevrolet Venture minivan and white Nissan Frontier work truck.

“Crews quickly began triaging and treating injured patients,” Zupec said.
Multiple fire engines and ambulances from both the Waukegan and North Chicago fire departments responded to the scene.

Police shut down all lanes of Green Bay Road between Belvidere Road and 10th Street.
A LifeNet medical helicopter, based out of McHenry, responded and landed on Green Bay Road.

The helicopter transported a seriously injured child to the Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Zupec said.
A total of eight other patients – seven adults and one child – were transported by ambulances with non-life-threatening injuries to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan and Northwestern Medicine Catherine Gratz Griffin Lake Forest Hospital.

Green Bay Road remained shut down into the evening while investigators with the Waukegan Police Department Major Crash Unit processed the crash.
The closures caused traffic delays along Green Bay Road and Belvidere Road during rush hour.

The crash remains under investigation by the Waukegan Police Department.
