Two rooms are uninhabitable after sprinklers activated and extinguished a fire caused by a candle on the second floor of a hotel in Libertyville Wednesday afternoon.
The Libertyville Fire Department, Libertyville Police Department and numerous automatic aid fire departments responded around 4:50 p.m. Wednesday to Sonesta Simply Suites in Libertyville, 1100 North Route 45, for a report of a structure fire.
The hotel is located near Route 45 and Winchester Road at the northwest corner of Libertyville and offers studio and one-bedroom rooms.
Dispatchers received a report from a third-party caller that a candle had accidentally caught clothes on fire in a room on the second floor, Libertyville Assistant Fire Chief Michael Hall said.
Police officers and firefighters arrived to find the building’s fire alarm and water sprinkler system activated.
Firefighters investigated and found Room #213 on the second floor had caught on fire, but the sprinklers had already extinguished it, Hall said.
Emergency responders worked to evacuate all three floors of the hotel while they investigated.
Firefighters also shut down the sprinkler system.
A customer of the hotel was evaluated by paramedics for injuries not directly caused by the fire itself, Hall said.
No other injuries were reported.
The majority of the damage was due to water on the second-floor north wing.
The first-floor north wing also sustained water damage.
Room #213 is uninhabitable, and the room below it, #113, is also uninhabitable due to water damage.
All other rooms remain habitable, Hall said.
Firefighters were seen coordinating with hotel management and the customers affected.
Multiple fire investigators responded and confirmed the fire in Room #213 was caused by the candle catching clothes on fire.
The Libertyville Planning, Building and Development Department as well as damage restoration crews responded to the scene.
The Libertyville Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Mundelein, Grayslake and Countryside fire departments.
