A Crystal Lake man was arrested in Marengo after he allegedly burglarized a convenience and liquor store in McHenry by forcing entry and stealing merchandise.
Jeremiah E. Borgert, 47, of Crystal Lake, was charged with one count of burglary, a Class 2 felony, and criminal damage to property, a Class A misdemeanor.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court said that the Shamrock Convenient Food and Liquor, 4105 West Shamrock Lane in McHenry, was the victim of a burglary around 10:45 p.m. on May 30.
The complaint said Borgert caused damage to the business by throwing a concrete block or rock through the front glass door.
Borgert then entered the store and stole merchandise, including Fireball whisky and Lucky Strike cigarettes, the complaint said.
The McHenry Police Department responded to the scene but the suspect had fled the scene.
An investigation led to the department obtaining the charges against Borgert on June 16, just over two weeks later.
An arrest warrant was issued after Borgert was charged and the warrant had remained outstanding until this past weekend.
Marengo Police Department Sgt. Adam Boyce said officers located Borgert around 10:09 p.m. Sunday at Casey’s, 200 East Grant Highway in Marengo.
Borgert, who is homeless, was taken into custody on the warrant and transported to the McHenry County Jail.
The charges are non-detainable under the Illinois SAFE-T Act and Borgert was released following an Initial Appearance Court hearing on Monday.
McHenry County Judge Michael Feetterer ordered Borgert not to possess firearms, not to go to Shamrock Convenient Food and Liquor and not to consume alcohol or drugs.
Borgert was also ordered to undergo random drug and alcohol testing at the discretion of the Office of Statewide Pretrial Services.
He is scheduled to appear in court again on July 28 for a status of preliminary hearing.
