Firefighters had to extricate a woman who was left trapped and injured inside her car after she ran a red light and crashed into a box truck, shutting down Route 14 in Cary Thursday morning.
The Cary Fire Protection District and Cary Police Department responded around 10:35 a.m. Thursday to the intersection of Route 14, also known as Crystal Street, and West Main Street in Cary for a report of a crash with entrapment.
Firefighters arrived to find a two-vehicle crash, with one vehicle resting on its side, according to Cary Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha.
An adult female driver was trapped inside the Subaru SUV.
Fire crews quickly stabilized the vehicle before beginning extrication operations, Vucha said.
It took approximately 15 minutes for firefighters to remove the driver, who was then transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the second vehicle, a small work truck belonging to Naturescape Irrigation, declined medical attention at the scene.
Cary Deputy Police Chief Scott Naydenoff said a 70-year-old female from Barrington was driving the Subaru westbound on Route 14 and disobeyed the red light to drive straight onto West Main Street as opposed to continuing westbound on Route 14.
Her vehicle then collided with the GMC box truck that was driving in the inside lane of eastbound Route 14 on a green traffic signal, Naydenoff said.
The box truck was being driven by a 43-year-old male from Lakemoor. The driver of the Subaru suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Naydenoff said.
Vucha said Route 14 and West Main Street were shut down in all directions for nearly an hour to allow emergency crews to safely operate and remove the damaged vehicles.
The Cary Police Department continues to investigate the cause of the crash and no citations have been issued yet.
