Firefighters rescued a person who was stranded on rocks at the North Point Marina in Winthrop Harbor after their jet ski overturned on Lake Michigan Friday morning.
The Winthrop Harbor Police Department and Winthrop Harbor Fire Department responded around 10:55 a.m. Friday to the North Point Marina, 701 North Point Drive in Winthrop Harbor, for a water rescue.
An off-duty member of the Winthrop Harbor Fire Department reported individuals in distress on rocks at the south beach of the marina, Winthrop Harbor Fire Department Lt. Coda Fernhout said.
Initial reports indicated that three individuals were in distress after their jet ski overturned, Fernhout said.
A wave runner and boat from the fire department, along with multiple fire/rescue personnel and a rescue swimmer, rushed to the scene.
“Upon arrival, crews determined that one individual remained stranded on the rocks and required immediate assistance,” Fernhout said.
The rescue swimmer on the wave runner used a life sled to rescue the person from the rocks.
The person was then transported back to shore without further incident, Fernhout said.
No injuries were reported to the rescued person or any emergency personnel.
Fernhout said the response and operations went smoothly, adding that the crews coordinated well and had the tools needed to make a quick rescue.
“The Winthrop Harbor Fire Department reminds all boaters and personal watercraft operators to wear properly fitted life jackets, remain aware of changing water conditions, and exercise caution while operating on Lake Michigan,” Fernhout said.
