A driver was able to free himself from a semi-truck that rolled over and spilled gravel, causing a roundabout to be partially shut down near Marengo Friday morning.
The Marengo Fire/Rescue Districts, Union Fire Protection District, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Marengo Police Department responded around 6:56 a.m. Friday to the area of Route 20, also known as Grant Highway, and Marengo Road in unincorporated Marengo for a report of a vehicle crash.
Marengo Fire/Rescue Districts Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said the incident was initially dispatched as a vehicle crash with entrapment due to a rollover being reported.
Fire crews arrived and found a semi-truck that had rolled over onto its side.
They found that the adult male driver had self-extricated himself from the cab of the truck before they arrived, Vucha said.
The driver was evaluated by paramedics but declined transport to the hospital.
Vucha said the crash resulted in gravel, which was being hauled in a dump trailer, spilling onto the roadway.
A small amount of diesel fuel from the semi-truck also spilled onto the roadway.
Fire officials issued an alert cautioning motorists who were in the area of the roundabout.
The southern portion of the roundabout was shut down temporarily while crews worked to clean the roadway.
The semi-truck and trailer were uprighted and removed from the scene, with crews continuing to work to clean up the spilled debris, Vucha said.
“Thank you for your patience as crews work to safely reopen the intersection,” the fire district said.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the crash. It is unknown if any citations or charges will be issued.
