Two 15-year-old girls riding an electric bike were injured, one with life-threatening injuries, after crashing with an SUV on Milwaukee Avenue in Libertyville Tuesday evening.
The Libertyville Police Department and Libertyville Fire Department responded around 9:08 p.m. Tuesday to the area of Winchester Road and Milwaukee Avenue for a report of a crash involving a car and an e-bike.
Police officers and firefighter/medics arrived to find a gray Chevrolet Blazer SUV and an e-bike involved on Milwaukee Avenue just north of Winchester Road in front of the Jimmy John’s.
A preliminary investigation shows the Chevrolet, driven by a man, was traveling northbound on Milwaukee Avenue and proceeded through the intersection of Winchester Road on a green light, Libertyville Deputy Police Chief Matt Goze said.
The e-bike, occupied by two 15-year-old girls, was traveling eastbound crossing Milwaukee Avenue just north of Winchester Road.
Both girls were injured in the crash. Two ambulances were dispatched to the scene.
Paramedics rushed them to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
One of the girls suffered life-threatening injuries and was transferred from Advocate Condell Medical Center to Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, Goze said.
The other is being treated at Advocate Condell Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries.
The man driving the Chevrolet did not report any injuries.
Due to the severity of the crash, the Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) of Lake County was requested to conduct an accident reconstruction.
Debris from the collision was scattered on Milwaukee Avenue in front of Jimmy John’s.
The Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System (ILEAS) was activated to bring in additional officers from the Mundelein, Lake Forest, Vernon Hills, and Wauconda police departments, as well as the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, to help with road closures and traffic control.
Parts of both Milwaukee Avenue and Winchester Road remained shut down into the early morning while MCAT worked the scene.
Goze said that the identities of the girls are not being released.
Police are expected to release more information as it becomes available.
The crash remains under investigation by the Libertyville Police Department and MCAT.
