A wanted suspect who was spotted by police attending the Scoop festival in Waukegan last weekend “trucked” a police officer “like a football player” while resisting arrest, prosecutors said.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Colleen McConnell said an officer was patrolling Scoop the Loop in the area of Genesse Street and Water Street in Waukegan on July 10.
The officer spotted Sirbruntae M. Moses, 26, of Waukegan, and recognized him from prior contacts and knew he had an active warrant.
Moses appeared to be trying to avoid the officer and the officer asked to speak with Moses, McConnell said.
Moses fled from officers eastbound towards Sheridan Road and ran behind porta-potties.
The officer believed that Moses was going to continue running towards Sheridan Road, McConnell said.
Moses instead circled back and allegedly ran right at the officer, knocking him to the ground.
Moses’ actions were described as a full “trucking” like a running back in football, McConnell said.
He was taken into custody and charged with aggravated battery of a peace officer, a Class 2 felony, and resisting arrest, a Class A misdemeanor.
The warrant that Moses was wanted on was for a domestic battery case in Lake County that occurred on July 2.
McConnell said the victim called police that morning to report Moses, who was her boyfriend, had punched her in the face at a storage facility in Beach Park and fled.
Deputies located him walking in the area of Lewis Avenue and 33rd Street. He was not immediately charged but a warrant was obtained for him later in the day, court records show.
Moses also has a driving while license revoked case out of Zion, which he had previously been released on in June.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain him in the domestic battery case and a petition to revoke his release in the driving case following his arrest at Scoop Waukegan.
McConnell said Moses has an “incredibly troubling” criminal history that includes prison sentences for being a felon in possession of a firearm, aggravated robbery and aggravated battery.
“This Defendant’s criminal history shows his history indicative of violence, access to firearms, and inability to abide by Court orders,” she said.
A pre-trial release revocation hearing was held this week and Lake County Judge Ari Fisz granted the petitions.
Moses remains held in the Lake County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court again on August 5 for a preliminary hearing.
