A suspicious package found unattended near gas pumps caused a gas station to be shut down and a large police response in Libertyville Monday morning, authorities said.
The Libertyville Police Department responded around 11:32 a.m. Monday to the Shell gas station, 1207 West Park Avenue, for a report of a suspicious package call.
Libertyville Deputy Police Chief Edward Swider said officers arrived and found a carry-on suitcase outside the gas station.
It was left unattended near the gas pumps, Swider said.
Officers considered it suspicious in nature and the area was cordoned off “out of an abundance of caution.”
Swider said the intersection of Route 176 and Butterfield Road was shut down to vehicle traffic.
Additional outside agencies were brought in to assist with the investigation.
The investigation and analysis of the suitcase determined that the item did not pose a danger, Swider said.
A passerby told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that police initially blocked off the gas station but then later shut down the roads around the gas station. A major police presence was seen, the passerby said.
Police did not release further information regarding what was inside the suitcase or whether the bomb squad was part of the response.
