An elderly couple was uninjured after their car crashed into the corner of their home’s garage, causing structural damage, in Gurnee Saturday afternoon, fire officials said.
The Gurnee Fire Department and Gurnee Police Department responded around 3:43 p.m. Saturday to the 1800 block of Sycamor Lane in Gurnee for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Fire crews arrived and found a car that had struck a single-family house.
Gurnee Fire Department Battalion Chief Jim Gramer said the crash involved a Honda Civic that hit the attached garage.
Two occupants were in the car, an 86-year-old male driver and an 82-year-old female passenger.
Both occupants were evaluated by paramedics and refused transport to the hospital, Gramer said.
Gramer said it is unclear whether the two homeowners were pulling into the garage or pulling out of the garage when it occurred.
The garage door was partially down when the car struck the corner of the structure.
Gramer said moderate damage occurred and some structural elements were involved.
The corner of the garage is load-bearing and fire crews, the Gurnee Building Department and a board-up company worked to evaluate the damage and secure the garage. The car was then removed from the structure.
Additional fire department resources were called to the scene as some members are on the structural collapse team for MABAS Divisions 4 and 5, Gramer said.
Electricity was shut off to the garage, which is unoccupiable. The home itself remains livable.
The Gurnee Police Department was investigating the cause of the crash.
