A vintage sports car was damaged after a fire broke out in the garage of a townhouse in a new residential development in Crystal Lake Sunday afternoon, fire officials said.
The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue responded around 1:06 p.m. Sunday to the 600 block of Water’s Edge Boulevard in Crystal Lake for a report of a structure fire.
Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Battalion Chief James Sustek said the fire department was already working at the scene of a different fire in another part of the city when the incident was dispatched.
The Carpentersville Fire Department, Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts, Cary Fire Protection District, West Dundee Fire Department and a Crystal Lake Fire Rescue chief responded.
Firefighters encountered a large multi-family residential building with smoke coming from the garage of the middle townhouse unit, Sustek said.
The incident was upgraded to a Working Fire response to bring additional resources to the scene.
Firefighters deployed two hose lines and quickly brought the fire under control at 1:27 p.m., Sustek said.
Fire crews had to cut through the garage door of the residence to access the fire.
Firefighters also conducted a search of all fire townhouse units in the building.
Sustek said the fire was confined to the garage of the unit. No fire extension or damage was found in the adjoining residences.
Firefighters ventilated the townhouse and completed minor overhaul operations to ensure there was no hidden fire extension.
The homeowners were inside the residence when the fire began, Sustek said.
They were alerted by the activation of their smoke alarms and the odor of smoke, allowing them to safely evacuate before firefighters arrived.
No residents or firefighter injuries were reported. The estimated damage to the property was $50,000.
Sustek said the home remained habitable as the property management company already had a clean-up crew on the way that same day.
A vintage sports car was inside the garage where the fire occurred. The car was later removed from the garage.
The Algonquin, Huntley, McHenry, Barrington-Countryside and Wauconda fire departments also assisted.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department and Nunda Rural Fire Protection District investigators.
