Police conducted an extensive search but were unable to find anyone after a woman claimed to have seen a young child standing alone in Barrington in the middle of the night.

The Barrington Police Department responded late in the evening on July 23 and into the morning of July 24 to a suspicious circumstances incident.

A woman called authorities to report she had seen a “young child” standing along the road, Barrington Police Chief David Daigle said.

She said she saw the child standing on the side of Hillside Avenue.

Officers made contact with the complainant, who estimated the child was approximately eight years old.

Officers responded to the general area and conducted a search but were unable to locate any wandering children.

The Palatine Police Department had a canine unit on duty and responded to assist in a track. The dog did not hit on anything.

The Arlington Heights Police Department had a drone unit available and responded to conduct an air search but it also ended without results.

Police officers were seen in the area of Lincoln Avenue and Hough Street, staged at the Salem United Methodist Church, around 2 a.m.

“Truth is we don’t even know if there was a kid or was it the figment of someone’s imagination,” Daigle said.

The police chief said his department has not received any reports of missing children.
