Sprinklers helped control a vehicle fire inside a Waukegan auto body shop before firefighters arrived and extinguished it Wednesday evening.
The Waukegan Fire Department responded around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday to Maaco Auto Body Shop & Painting, 3232 West Grandville Avenue in Waukegan, for a report of a structure fire.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the overhead garage doors of the occupied auto body shop, Waukegan Battalion Fire Chief of Administration Todd Zupec said.
The employees told firefighters that there was a fire in one of the vehicles and that everyone had evacuated the facility.
“Fire crews initiated an offensive attack and deployed hose lines to extinguish the fire in a single vehicle inside the building,” Zupec said.
The building’s automatic sprinkler and fire alarm system activated and helped keep the fire from growing until firefighters arrived, Zupec added.
Firefighters remained on scene to ventilate the building and ensure final extinguishment.
No injuries were reported.
A portion of West Grandville Avenue was shut down while firefighters worked the scene.
“The exact cause is still being investigated, but the vehicle was undergoing repairs at the time of the fire,” Zupec said.
