A man was arrested after he allegedly drove his Audi recklessly while drunk on Route 41 before losing control and crashing into an SUV in the opposite lane, causing it to rollover, near Gurnee.
Brendan J. Sink, 23, of Waukegan, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, improper lane usage, driving the wrong way on a divided highway and operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 1 p.m. Wednesday to the 35700 block of Route 41, which is between Route 21 and Kilbourne Road, in unincorporated Gurnee, for reports of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Deputies and firefighter/paramedics arrived to find a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox SUV and a 2014 Audi S4 sedan involved in the southbound lanes of Route 41 with heavy damage.
The Chevrolet was rolled over onto its roof.
The 73-year-old man driving the Chevrolet was transported to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, Lake County Sheriff’s Office Chief Christopher Covelli said.
The Audi was allegedly driven by Sink with a 27-year-old woman as the passenger.
Both Sink and the woman refused to be transported to the hospital.
A preliminary investigation shows Sink was driving northbound on Route 41, Covelli said.
“According to witnesses, the driver was weaving as he was traveling northbound,” Covelli said.
“As he continued northbound, he appeared to lose control of his car and drove into the southbound lanes of Route 41, striking the southbound Chevrolet Equinox, causing the Chevrolet to roll several times,” Covelli added.
Deputies conducted a DUI investigation and found Sink was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
Sink was arrested and booked into the Lake County Jail, where he was later released in the evening.
He is scheduled to appear at the Lake County Courthouse on August 12.
An employee of a landscaping company near the crash said he rushed to the aid of the 73-year-old man in the Chevrolet.
The man was conscious, and the employee stayed with him until emergency responders arrived, he told Lake & McHenry County Scanner.
Sink has had four prior traffic cases in Lake County, court records show.
In one of the active cases, Sink was charged with reckless driving, street racing and numerous traffic offenses in North Chicago in September 2025.
