People were evacuated from a medical office building after an SUV became fully engulfed in flames next to the building and a small explosion occurred in Kildeer, fire officials said.
The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department and Kildeer Police Department responded around 4:53 p.m. Tuesday to Northwest Community Healthcare Immediate Care, 21481 North Rand Road in Kildeer, for a report of a vehicle fire.
Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Chief David Pilgard said firefighters arriving at the scene found an active vehicle fire.
The car was fully engulfed in flames and the fire was impinging on the building.
Firefighters noted that four other vehicles were in close proximity and at risk of catching fire, Pilgard said.
Firefighters also witnessed a small explosion. The area does not have fire hydrants or a municipal water source.
The incident was upgraded to a structure fire response to bring additional water and additional firefighters to the scene, Pilgard said.
Firefighters pulled hose lines and began extinguishing the fire, which took approximately 1,500 gallons of water.
Police and fire crews activated Northwest Community Healthcare Immediate Care’s fire alarm system and worked to evacuate the building to keep people away from the fire, Pilgard said.
Firefighters checked both floors of the building to ensure there was no smoke or fire inside. The building sustained minor damage when it was struck by debris from the car.
The vehicle was unoccupied at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported, Pilgard said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department.
