A child, possibly 12 or 13 years old, was seriously injured and reportedly left with amputated fingers after a fireworks accident at a home in Lake in the Hills, authorities said.
The Lake in the Hills Police Department and Huntley Fire Protection District responded around 3:05 a.m. on July 27 to the 200 block of Bridlewood Circle in Lake in the Hills for a traumatic injury.
A 12-year-old boy suffered a hand injury from a firework that was blown off inside a home, according to fire department radio traffic.
Officers arrived and reported that the victim was missing several fingers.
Huntley Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Mike Pierce said paramedics arrived and found a juvenile victim, approximately 12-13 years old.
The child had suffered severe damage to one of his hands after a firework reportedly went off, Pierce said.
A medical helicopter was requested to respond but was unable to fly due to weather conditions at the time.
The boy was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley for treatment.
His condition was unknown but his injuries were serious, Pierce said.
A neighbor told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the firework sounded like a “loud single gunshot” and they saw many police and fire department vehicles respond minutes later.
Pierce said the Lake in the Hills Police Department was investigating the circumstances of the incident.
